When you think of Edinburgh you’d be forgiven for not automatically thinking of sunshine and picnics but when the sun does make an appearance you will see Edinburgh in a new light.
A beautiful city, especially when the sun is shining.
We’ve made a list of our 5 favourite picnic spots:
1.The Meadows
The Meadows is one of the most popular spots for picnics in the city and on a sunny day it comes to life with loads of people flocking here to enjoy the outdoors. If you’re local it’s almost expected that you’ll have picnicked here at least once.
2. Dunbar’s Close Garden
A wee hidden gem right in the heart of the city, Dunbar’s Close Garden is hidden down a tiny close just off the Royal Mile. It’s hard to believe that there can be any peaceful spot near the busiest of Edinburgh’s city streets but pay a wee visit here and you will experience true tranquility in the city.
3. Harrison Park
Sitting by the Union Canal, Harrison Park is a lovely place to picnic and watch locals walk their dogs, kids play and the ducks swim by. Stunning at all times of the year you don’t even need to wait for the sunshine to enjoy it here.
4. Calton Hill
Calton Hill is just 1 of 7 other hills in Edinburgh and is just a 10 minute walk from busy Princes Street. Don’t let the short steep climb put you off as it’s more than worth it when you get to the top and can experience panoramic views of the city. Overlooking the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood you’ll be amazed what you can see while you enjoy your lunch.
5. Blackford Hill
Not that well known by many of Edinburgh’s visitors many folk would rather visit Arthur Seat but in the Southside of the city you’ll still experience amazing views from lovely Blackford Hill and it’ll be a bit quieter too. It’s popular with locals for hiking and walking and you can picnic in peace while admiring Edinburgh Castle and if it’s sunny and clear you might even be able to see as far as the Firth of Forth.
